Girl’s Division for the 2013 season
After an extremely successful inaugural season the WPBHL girl’s division is expanding to include more teams! The Girls division plays at the Jimmie Simpson Rink (Queen St. East and Booth Ave.), which is part of the Jimmie Simpson Community Centre facility.
To answer questions you may have regarding this division, we’ve prepared the FAQ below.
• Who is eligible to register for the Girls division?
Girls who were born in 2006, 05, 04, 03, 02, 01 and 2000 (girls who are currently in grades 1-7) are eligible to register
• When does registration for the Girls division begin?
Online registration for New Players begins at 8AM on Saturday January 26, 2013
• How do I register my daughter for the Girls division?
Registration for the Girls division will be the same process as our existing online registration system through our website with payment by credit card (cheques are not accepted).
• How many groups/teams will there be?
There with be three age groups; ages 7-8 (Tyke), 9-10 (Novice) and 11-13 (Atom) – we plan on having a total of 12 teams with 4 teams per group
• What days and times do the age groups play?
Games will start on Saturday April 6. Games are on both Saturday and Sunday through to the end of June.
➢ Tyke girls will play @10AM and 11AM
➢ Novice girls will play @12 noon and 1 PM
➢ Atom girls will play @ 2PM and 3PM
• Is my daughter able to register for the co-ed Withrow Park division?
Returning and new girls may register for the co-ed division if they please. Female players may not register for both divisions and acceptance will be based on availability.
• Why does the girl’s division play at the Jimmie Simpson rink?
Withrow Rink is currently at capacity with our existing WPBHL co-ed youth division programs. JS offers the best local alternate facility, with a newly refurbished rink, separate male and female change rooms and proximity to the staff and facilities of the JS Community Centre. JS also offers the capacity to expand the Girls division to more teams and additional age groups in the coming years.
• Are there opportunities to play competitive ball hockey through the WPBHL Girl’s houseleague division?
The past 2 years the WPBHL’s Girls division has sent a team play at the OBHA tournament in July. We plan to play at this tournament again this year. Try out dates and times will be communicated after the season is under way.
• How can I get involved?
We are looking for female coaches and rink staff (ages 16+) and timekeepers (ages 13+). Karen Decker is the Director for the Girls Division and all enquiries should be directed to her attention at info@withrowballhockey.net. Karen is a member of the WPBHL Board. We need to get the word out that we are anticipating that (with the expansion) there will be spots available in the Girls Tyke and Girls Novice divisions.
Girls Division gets off to a great start

The inaugural weekend of the Girls Division got off to a great start at the Jimmie Simpson Arena. With fabulous weather and plenty of enthusiasm in the air all games were played. League president, Dan Jenkins, kicked off the ceremony followed by Division Convener, Karen Decker and Councillor Paula Fletcher dropping of the first ball. Thanks to all parents and friends who came out to watch and show their support. Pictures of the event are posted in the gallery.
Girls Division for the 2012 season
For the upcoming 2012 ball hockey season, the WPBHL is pleased to announce our intention to expand beyond Withrow Park and to offer, for the first time ever, a Girls division. The Girls division will play at the Jimmie Simpson Rink (Queen St. East and Booth Ave.), which is part of the Jimmie Simpson Community Centre facility.
To answer questions you may have regarding this new initiative, we’ve prepared the FAQ below.
• Why a Girls Division?
Every year we see a significant drop off in girls’ registrations as the players get older. Last year, 34 girls registered in our youngest division (4, 5, 6 year olds). That number dropped to only 17 in our Atom division (10 & 11 years). Responding to feedback from parents and players, the Board would like to ensure that there is a place for more girls in our community to continue to have fun playing ball hockey.
• Who is eligible to register for the Girls division?
Girls between the ages of 7 (YOB 2005) and 12 (YOB 2000) are eligible to register for this new Girls division.
• Will there be any changes to the current youth divisions playing at Withrow Park Rink?
No, these youth divisions will remain co-ed and eligible for registration by all interested returning and new players.
• How many age groups/teams will there be?
There will be two age groups; ages 7 – 9 (Girls Novice) and ages 10 – 12 (Girls Atom). In this inaugural season, we plan to have 4 teams per age group. MORE
